"It's possible of course, to put the brakes on as you work and to finish the picture so carefully that you can't tell one stroke from another. But if everyone did that, our pictures would all look alike. That kind of "finish" is part of the craft of painting; it belongs to the craftsman, not the artist with emotions and blood in his veins. You can tickle and tickle - and maybe even get a likeness. But what good is it? Without the artist's personality, a picture is like an orchestra without cymbals or timpani. You need accents. You need drum rolls!"
